Dear Humanity : Hope, My Little Friend

A letter from a classroom that gave me back my faith in the future

Dear Humanity,

I want to tell you about a Monday morning last October.

I was journaling with a cup of my coffee when an email arrived from a teacher named Rick. Inside was a link. A reflection wall. Twenty-eight letters — one from every student I had spoken to at Polytechnic School the week before.

I sat with my coffee going cold and read every single one.

They were seventeen, eighteen years old. They wrote about empathy, forgiveness, courage, and hope. They wrote about feeling history differently — not as a list of dates and facts, but as a living story carried in the human heart. One student quoted something I had said during my talk:

“Hope is like a little friend that walks with you through life.”

Reading that back, I felt that little friend walk right back in beside me.
